Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) is a public research university based in Richmond, Virginia. VCU was established in 1838 as the medical department of Hampden–Sydney College, which became the Medical College of Virginia in 1854. In 1968, the General Assembly of Virginia merged MCV with the Richmond Professional Institute, established in 1917, to establish the Virginia Commonwealth University. In 2018, more than 31,000 students will pursue 217 degree and certificate programs through 11 VCU schools and three colleges. The VCU Health System supports the education, science and patient care of the university. The Virginia Commonwealth University Global Student Success Program is devised to make sure students obtain the required abilities to stand out in their undergraduate or graduate degree program. The GSSP is a university-level academic program meant to support global students as they adapt to life in the United States.

By offering additional academic, social, and cultural support during the first year, GSSP staff and faculty help out students develop a strong foundation that helps their future accomplishment. Undergraduate students qualify for a two- or three-semester GSSP depending on their academic criteria and English proficiency. Upon successful completion of the GSSP, students move into the second year of their chosen degree course. Since the Student GSSP is equivalent to the first year of a bachelor’s degree, students are still on track to graduate in a total of four years. Graduate students will enrol in a two-semester GSSP and complete nine graduate credits during the curriculum. These nine credits are applied in the direction of the graduate program of choice. Most graduate GSSP students complete their degree in a total of two or two-and-a-half years

All outstanding freshman applicants are automatically considered for university-level scholarships if they apply for the fall semester by Nov. 1 — no separate application needed. What’s our criteria? Recipients are selected based on academic merit; leadership, community service and artistic talent (when applicable) also may be considered. A limited number of scholarships are also awarded to transfer applicants from the Virginia Community College System who have earned a minimum of 45 semester credit hours.
