The University of Miami was founded in 1925 by a group of citizens who felt that higher learning universities were needed for the development of their young and growing community. The land boom in South Florida was at its height, with ample resources, hope streaming, and high expectations. The Miami Hurricanes are part of the Coastal Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference and the 17 Varsity Sports Region. The University of Miami's Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is dedicated to developing and assisting more than 400 student athletes in their efforts to achieve professional, academic and athletic excellence.One of the top private higher education institutions in the country, the University of Miami is committed to making sure its student-athletes have the resources and programs they need to succeed, both on and off the field. It has one of the highest graduation success rates among ACC schools. The University of Miami has three more than 400 acre campuses in Miami-Dade County, stretching from Coral Gables and Miami City to South Dade. Coral Gables campus, the University's main campus, is home to two colleges and seven schools, and is located on a 239-acre site in Coral Gables, about seven miles from downtown Miami. The campus is one of South Florida's prime destinations for a rich variety of arts and culture offerings.

UM awards merit-based scholarships to incoming undergraduate students based on their achievements. Students are automatically considered for an academic scholarship when they apply for admission to UM.  Read less
