Maryland touts 800-plus student groups, dozens of prominent living and learning communities, and numerous other ways to get involved. Students here can build a unique identity and grow as individuals, even as they’re part of a close-knit and diverse society. College Park, MD, is the home of the University of Maryland. The growing college town presents a great variety of shops and restaurants, featuring dishes that span the globe. A popular hiker-biker trail runs right through campus and past Lake Artemisia, a great picnicking place. Neighbouring communities offer shopping malls, movie theatres and just about every other amenity student can imagine. Just a Metro ride away, students can catch all the sights, culture and nightlife of Washington, D.C. They can watch the performance of global superstars at the Capital One Arena, watch a game featuring one of D.C.'s five big professional sports teams, explore historic Georgetown, or walk down the National Mall to visit one of the 11 free Smithsonian Museums and Art Galleries.

Students receive awards up to $5,000 to study abroad, and $8000 for a Critical Need Language Award. UMD's National Scholarships Office (NSO) can assist you with your application.To be eligible for a Gilman Scholarship you must: be a US Citizen and a current degree-seeking undergraduate UMD student.
