Texas Tech University is the biggest institution of the Texas Tech University System. More than 38,000 students go to classes in Lubbock on the 1,839-acre campus. It was formed by legislative action in 1923 and has the honor of being the biggest comprehensive higher education institution in the western two-thirds of the state of Texas.

With a population of more than 240,000, Lubbock is in the central part of the vast Southern Plains of West Texas and Eastern New Mexico. It is a major medical center for an area within a 300-mile radius of Lubbock and a major regional center for business and industry. The climate is exceptional, with more than 3,550 hours of sunshine every year and a typical annual rainfall of 18 inches. Winters are dry and moderate, while the summer heat is mitigated by very little humidity. Several airlines and interstate bus linework for the city, as well as an interstate highway and three additional U.S. highways.
Texas Tech honors outstanding candidates with merit-based scholarships and offers need-based financial support to eligible families. Athletic, choir, choral, fine arts, and departmental honors are available from individual divisions. Many TTU Scholarships are administered by the Student Financial Assistance and Scholarships Office. A variety of grants are now available to new and continuing students by awards made by university departments.
