Founded in 1869 as the state’s second university with a dozen academic departments and an inaugural class of 143, SIU Carbondale is the flagship site of the Southern Illinois University System. It is a strong, varied, student-centred research-intensive and comprehensive university that lately earned the prestigious 2015 community engagement classification from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

SIU Carbondale is a doctoral research college having students from more than 40 states and 20 countries. It presents more than 200 undergraduate degrees, more than 80 masterís degrees and more than 30 doctoral degrees, in addition to specialized degrees in law and medicine.

Carbondale is where learning, culture and nature come together. The natural beauty of the region is a major charm to students, faculty and visitors.
