NIU offers more than 100 undergraduate programs and 80 graduate programs across its 42 schools and divisions across seven colleges. Students are active and engaged on campus. There are over 300 student groups registered with the Student Association headquartered in the Life Building Campus. These categories are categorized as academic and technical, community service, diversity and culture, governing bodies, fraternity, and sororities, honorary societies, political, military, programming and performance, recreation and sports, religious and social. Sports clubs are a perfect way to stay safe and active, make new friends, and play.

With more than 500 students currently attending, clubs are not only a great way to remain active, but also a great way to network, learn a new sport, and gain leadership experience. Northern Illinois University is accredited by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in the Research Universities group (high research activity). NIU is also among a limited percentage of public institutions identified as Innovation and Economic Prosperity Universities by the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU). The classification honors universities collaborating with public and private sector partners in their countries and regions to promote economic growth. Home to NIU's main campus, DeKalb offers students a full conventional university experience. The 765-acre campus is an architectural blend of architecture and natural beauty.

Once an international student has been admitted to NIU as a freshman or transfer student, they will automatically be considered for either a merit or housing scholarship. Students will be awarded either one of these scholarships as long as they are still available.
