Kansas State University was established in 1858 as the Bluemont Central College of 53 enrolled students. Five years later, the name changed to Kansas State Agricultural College and was given land-grant status. The university was just the second public higher education institution in the U.S. to accept both men and women equally. K-State is known for excellence in its various academic programs, excellent faculty, and pioneering research.
