Indiana State University was founded on 20 December 1865 under the Indiana Statute and was originally known as the Indiana State Normal School. Its primary mission was to train teachers for Indiana's common schools. Indiana State Normal School awarded its first baccalaureate degree in 1908, master's degrees were awarded in 1928, and the first doctoral degree in philosophy was awarded in 1968.
ISU provides more than 100 majors, 70 online programs, and countless opportunities for students through its undergraduate and graduate degrees. The ISU Treehouse is a social network for students to discover student groups, find an event to attend, and link to the campus. There are currently 270 registered student organizations that encourage student engagement on campus. Studies have shown that students enrolled on campus are increasing retention and persistence towards graduation. The main campus of Indiana State University is located on the north side of Terre Haute's downtown business district and occupies more than 200 acres in the center of the city. Varsity soccer, track & field, and baseball are located within a mile of the main campus along the Wabash River.
Indiana State University offers a number of scholarships for both undergraduate and graduate international students All incoming first-year undergraduate students with: a minimum cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 evidenced by a high school transcript, and fulfillment of the English proficiency requirements (see English Proficiency Requirements). Freshman can receive up to $4000 per year (fall and spring semesters only); the scholarships are renewable for up to seven semesters.
