Florida State University was established in 1851, one of the largest and oldest of the 12 higher education institutions in the Florida State University System, which started in 1823 when the Territorial Legislature began to plan a higher education system. FSU retains and disseminates expertise in science, technology, the arts, humanities, and trades while promoting a theory of learning firmly rooted in the traditions of liberal arts.

The university offers fully accredited programs in the fields of law (J.D.) and medicine (M.D.). Florida State University also provides a number of opportunities for students to study abroad during the normal academic year, as well as in special summer programs in Florence, Italy, Panama City, the Republic of Panama, Valencia, Spain, and London, England.

The main campus is built on Florida's oldest continuous higher education site, in an environment that fosters free inquiry and celebrates diversity, along with championship athletes, and a prime place in the center of the state capital. Degree programs are available at branch campuses in Panama City, Florida, and the Republic of Panama and off-campus training centers in Sarasota, New York, and at the St. Petersburg College University Collaboration Center in Seminole.

The university's 4-year graduation rate is 74%, with FSU ranking first in the Florida State University System and top 10 nationally among public universities. More significantly, it is the highest four-year graduation rate in the history of the State University System. In addition, the FSU had a six-year graduation rate of 84 percent—also a university record.

Florida State also provides a variety of scholarship and financial assistance programs for students. FSU offers a variety of generous merit scholarships to applicants, most of which do not require additional applications. Significant FSU merit scholarships include Freshman University Scholarship, Presidential Scholars Program, Talent Scholarship.
