Claremont Graduate University is like no other graduate university in the country. Founded in 1925, CGU is an independent institution entirely dedicated to graduate studies. At CGU, students are encouraged to pursue academic research agendas within and across traditional curriculum boundaries. As a member of The Claremont Colleges, a consortium of seven independent institutions, CGU is able to provide a wider range of faculty and campus resources than is typical of a university with 2,200 students.

The Carnegie Higher Education Commission ranks Claremont Graduate University as R2: Doctoral Research University, Higher Research Activity. Many of our academic programs are practice-based, so students start working as well as learning in their field. Enrolment is limited and classes are small, so our scholars receive individualized mentoring, which expands their professional network and prepares them for a remarkable career. WSCUC is a non-profit organization that assesses the quality and effectiveness of education in schools, colleges, and universities. Institutions must retain their accreditation status in order to be eligible for federal financial assistance and to receive transfer units from other accredited schools. CGU also holds the prestigious ranking of Doctoral Research UniversityñExtensive (R-2) awarded to the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching is committed to the development of networks of ideas, individuals, and institutions for the advancement of teaching and learning.

The Office of Student Life, Diversity and Leadership (SLDL) manages student organizations and serves as a resource for them. There is a broad range of organizations at CGU that may satisfy your academic or social preferences. Students also have the opportunity to strengthen and develop their leadership skills through these organizations by planning, developing, and implementing campus events or collaborating with other organizations or constituents of the campus.
