The university has one of the largest cooperative education systems in California, putting students in paying positions where they earn academic credit. Hundreds of other students take part in business and government internships. One-third of Sacramento State students serve as volunteers through a service-learning project in the classroom, gaining important work experience while supporting their communities. The Career Center helps students recognize career preferences, improve interview skills, and find employment through Hornet Career Link, a collaboration with local and global employers. Numerous academic programs often have direct ties to employers that are hiring directly on campus.

The stunning 300-acre campus is surrounded by green landscapes and more than 3,500 trees. Sacramento State has also recently constructed the two greenest buildings in the history of the University. The American River Courtyard is a suite-style campus residence with facilities such as private suites, kitchenettes, and in-suite student bathrooms. The WELL, state-of-the-art leisure, and wellness facility, incorporate gym space, exercise equipment, medical services, an indoor track. Miles of riverside trails for runners and bikers extend along the nearby American River Parkway, connecting campus and student housing to recreation areas such as Folsom Lake and Old Sacramento.

Sacramento State students live an active life. Campus-sponsored arts activities, speeches, debates, comedy shows, and concerts enrich the group throughout the year, and there are plenty of cultural and entertainment opportunities in the local area. More than half of the university's students join at least one of 250 student groups and thousands engage in the intramural sports program. Approximately 400 intercollegiate athletes compete at NCAA Division I level.

The Sacramento State Financial Aid & Scholarship Office awards almost $4 million in institutional scholarship opportunities each year. By completing a single application, students will be matched to the scholarship opportunities offered at Sac State. Scholarships are offered to undergraduate and graduate students who meet specific criteria by different colleges, departments, and organizations.
