Whitireia is a government-owned and financed tertiary institute of technology, known for its high student achievement rates and culturally varied student body. Established in 1986, on the shores of the Porirua Harbour, Whitireia has grown-up to become the tertiary institution of choice for over 6,200 students (over 3,440 equivalent full-time students), who study at one of its modern campuses in Porirua, Wellington, and Auckland.
Over 135 programs of study are offered at certificate, diploma, degree, postgraduate, and master levels. All programs have been created in conjunction with industry to offer outstanding applied qualifications, all endorsed by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. Many of their professors and staff members have close corporate connections and are working on ventures with companies and organizations. Their specialties are in engineering and technology, especially in testing and product production. In addition, the institute conducts applied research in fields ranging from creativity to building. We are dedicated to exploring vocational education, with a focus on how students learn better and creative and innovative approaches to train trades tutors.
The institute invests in the government's Performance-Based Research Fund (PBRF) assessment, which awards grants to tertiary institutions based on the nature of their research. Whitireia New Zealand's ranking continues to rise with each round.
