The Northern Lights College officially opened in September 1975. In the very beginning, it was a vocational school known as the BC Vocational School-Dawson Creek. It is a representative of British Columbia Colleges (BC Colleges), a local group consists of 11 colleges from throughout the Province of British Columbia. BC Colleges has a distinctive regional advantage and a long history of partnership with industry, employers, communities, and policymakers. This cooperative approach allows BC Colleges to graduate extremely skilled workers who are equipped to support their families, build healthier groups, and power the economy in all British Columbia regions.
Programs at NLC are intended to give students the chance to obtain the necessary classroom education and supplement that with proper practicum or hands-on prospects to make the successful transition from student to employee. Certificate programs are usually one year in duration. Associate degrees take two years of study (60 credits) and can transfer to the third year of degree programs at provincial universities and university-colleges.
NLC has campus sites in Chetwynd, Dawson Creek, Fort Nelson, Fort St. John, and Tumbler Ridge, along with access centers in Atlin, Dease Lake, and Hudson's Hope. Northern Lights College campuses have relaxed atmospheres, where students may gather to study or visit, in common areas such as the cafeteria, Student Residence standard rooms, Aboriginal Gathering Space, or lounge areas.
The Northern Lights College provides programs in Apprenticeships and Trades, Business Management, Applied Business Technology, Workforce Training, Clean Energy Technology like Wind Turbine Maintenance, Teacher Training, Aircraft Maintenance Engineering, Academic and University Sciences and Arts, College and Career Preparation, Upgrading Preparation, Oil and Gas Training, Early Childhood Education, and Education or Care Assistant.
