TOEFL, or Test of English as a Foreign Language, tests non-native speakers’ ability to use and understand North American English as it is written, spoken, heard, and understood in college and university contexts. You can retake the test only three days after taking the first TOEFL test.
There are three ways to register for the TOEFL Exam:
- Online, at the ETS website
- Through E-mail
- By phone
Before registering, one must decide on the test center and check the dates that are available at that center. The dates depend on the test center one chooses. To understand how to apply for the TOEFL exam, the online TOEFL registration can be done anytime as the registration is open 24/7, however, registration closes seven days before the actual test date and three days prior in case of last-minute registration with an additional late fee of 40 USD over the normal fee. Registration can be completed by paying the registration fee of 190 USD (in India) using a VISA credit or debit card.
TOEFL Registration Process
Here are the Steps for the process of TOEFL Registration:
STEP 1: Go to the Official Website
On the TOEFL official website, candidates must create a new account or log in to an existing account.
STEP 2: Make a profile for TOEFL test takers
Candidates would then be expected to meticulously flesh out their TOEFL test-taker profile. They would be required to provide additional information that could be useful during the admissions process or the submission of TOEFL scores.
STEP 3: Choose your TOEFL Test Date and Location
Candidates would then be required to choose the most convenient TOEFL Exam Date for them as test-takers.
Candidates can then choose a convenient Test Center or take the newly launched TOEFL at Home version of the test.
STEP 4: Pay the TOEFL Registration Fee
After selecting his preferred Test Date and Exam Center, the candidate will be directed to the exam payment gateway page. Candidates must pay a TOEFL registration fee or TOEFL form fee of US $190. Candidates should check the details of the examination credentials carefully. After the payment is made, any future changes will be charged.
STEP 5: Confirm your TOEFL Application and Submit it
Once payment has been received. Candidates would have submitted their TOEFL application form successfully. Candidates may print a copy of their acknowledgement receipt. They would also be able to access the same information on their account dashboard for future reference.

- Download the TOEFL Registration Form from the ETS website
- Fill up the information with black or blue ink
- Choose a method of payment
- Send the form to the address mentioned on the form or to the Regional Registration Center with the payment
- Last date for receipt of the forms is four weeks before the test date
- When the form is received, a confirmation will be sent
- If the confirmation is not received within three days of the registration deadline, please call the regional registration center
- In the case of registration by mail, certain codes are required, so remember to mention the codes accurately.
Valid Identification Documents for the TOEFL test
For the TOEFL test, as in all tests, the test taker must carry a valid document of identification which should meet the following criteria:
- It should be an original document issued by the Government of India, and which is recognized in India
- Photocopied documents and soft copies on mobile phones or other electronic devices are inadmissible
- The document should be valid and the date of expiry should not be less than six months
- Use a recent photograph
- Signature on the ID and the signature on the Registration form must match
- In India, a valid identification document is only a valid passport.
Candidates, who have any disabilities or health-related issues and would require carrying equipment or snacks and beverages to the testing room or may needing extra or extended breaks, or requiring an accommodation, should inform the officials via email and follow the recommended procedures.
TOEFL Eligibility
The TOEFL exam is open to everyone, and there are no TOEFL eligibility requirements. The eligibility criteria for the various institutes may differ, however, the TOEFL has no precise criteria for appearing in the exam.
TOEFL Test Centers in India
The TOEFL India test dates are subject to vary, however the test is normally held on Saturdays and Sundays at the test locations. You can retake the test as many times as you like, but you can only do it once per three days.
