How to register for GRE in India?

 

What is GRE?

GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) is a kind of standardized test that is conducted by Educational Testing Services (ETS). The scores of GRE are considered for the Master Degree Programs by the majority of the top graduate-level institutions. In the past few decades, the entire format of this test has changed over multiple times. At this point, it is known as the GRE revised General Test.

 

GRE: Exam Eligibility

A candidate intends to appear for the GRE requires proving identity via submitting a valid Identity Proof. Talking about India, a candidate needs a valid original passport that bears a full name, signature, and photograph. Therefore, it is only the passport that is considered as a valid document to submit to register for GRE in India, and no other documents or ID Proofs can be its substitute.

 

Eligibility Requirement

To register for GRE, a bachelor’s degree is the bare minimum requirement. Also, a candidate must be above 18 years of age. However, various universities do set a range of eligibility criteria. Such criteria may include experience, qualification, minimum age, etc.

 

GRE Exam Test Dates

There are no precise dates related to GRE Exam in India, unlike, other entrance exams dates. A candidate may register for GRE in India to attempt it anytime. For the same, a candidate needs to book a slot with the nearby GRE center.

 

GRE Test Centers In India

In India, the GRE is primarily conducted by Prometric. Besides that, there are other independent teams based out in the following cities that do conduct the GRE test. They include Vijayawada, Vadodara, Pune, Hyderabad, Trivandrum, Gandhinagar, Gurgaon, Kolkata, Dehradun, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Cochin, Nashik, New Delhi, Mumbai, Allahabad, Chennai, Coimbatore, Patna, Gwalior, Indore, and Nizamabad. Nevertheless, not all of the centers offer the computerized exam. A few of them may provide the paper-delivered test. Therefore, it is better to enquire about the format, whether it is going to be a paper-based exam or a computer-based, by getting in touch with your preferred center. However, there is no denial to the fact that ETS is gradually expanding its reach in India and in the next time, there will come up with many more additional GRE centers.

GRE Fees In India

The registration fee to attempt the GRE is INR 22,500. However, in case if a candidate intends to change the exam center or reschedule the exam, there is an additional charge that is required to be paid by a candidate 

 

GRE Exam Registration Procedure

There are four ways to proceed with registration related to the GRE in India:- 

Online Registration

Once a candidate login into the ETS website, the precise personal information will be required to be filled in including name, address, etc. GRE fee payment can be made by debit/credit card. After this, a candidate may log in and pick a suitable date and center to attempt this exam. However, this registration option cannot be availed by the test takers having health issues or disabilities. Online registration steps for the GRE include:-

  • Log in to the official GRE website to create an account.
  • Opt for a preferred test date.
  • Book GRE slot to attempt the exam
  • Choose the preferred test center.
  • Enter all personal details.
  • Exam fee payment by using an internationally accepted debit or credit card.

Mail Registration

A printed application form along with the prescribed fee may be sent to the following

The form must be received by the center bare minimum three weeks before appearing for the GRE test. A candidate will receive the confirmation number, test center address and reporting time via email or fax.

Phone Registration

A candidate needs to get in touch with the RRC (Regional Registration Center) which is ‘Prometric’ situated in Gurgaon, Haryana.

Fax Registration

A printed Application Form, along with the prescribed fee, needs to be sent at the relevant fax number. The application form must be received by the center a minimum of 7 days before the first preference in terms of the test date.

Conclusion

A candidate may attempt GRE once every 21 days for the five times in an uninterrupted rolling period of 12 months. The peak GRE application season begins from August and lasts until December. A candidate must keep this information in mind because it may be really difficult to get hold of a slot in a preferred examination center. Either a candidate needs to consider the non-peak time to register for GRE or needs to opt for a center that may not be close by. Therefore, it is highly recommendable to plan about scheduling a test and GRE preparation well in advance to avoid any last-minute hassle.
