AP Exam Pattern

Advanced Placement (AP) exams are offered by the College Board in the United States of America (USA). Students take AP courses for a year at the high school level and the exams are held in May every year.

The general AP exam pattern consists of multiple-choice and free-response sections.

Overview of AP exam pattern.

Here are the common highlights of every AP exam:

  • The duration of most exams is 2-3 hours.
  • In the multiple-choice questions, the total score is based on the number of correctly answered questions.
  • No negative marking for incorrect or unanswered questions.
  • Free-response questions comprise the second part of the AP exam, where candidates have to generate their answers.
  • Responses can be in spoken format, in essay form, or as a solution to a problem.

Before you check the exam pattern, make sure that you know the AP exam eligibility and AP exam fees. Let us take a look at the AP exam pattern for different subjects under broad categories.
