Student Visa for Sweden

International students who want to study at a university or higher vocational education institution in Sweden for longer than 90 days must apply for both a student visa and a residence permit.

The student visa is issued for the length of the course duration. There are two types of visas issued by the Swedish authorities to non-EU/EEA students:

  • Student Visa

Made available to students who want to undertake a brief study in Sweden. The duration of the course should not be more than ninety days or three months. This visa may be for vocational courses, collaborative research, or internships. The student visa helps Indian students discover Swedish educational institutions and assess if they will study in Sweden in the future.

  • Residence Permit

For long-term programs that run beyond 90 days. The residence permit is an essential requirement for students who wish to enroll in courses that are longer than 90 days including bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate courses.

Eligibility

To apply for a student visa for Sweden, there are some documents that you will have to provide to strengthen your application,

  • Valid Passport

A valid passport is required throughout the visa application period and must be valid for at least 6 months after the intended period of stay in Sweden.

  • Admission Letter from a Swedish University

The admission letter proves that you have a reason as to why you would want to travel to Sweden and that you also fulfil the requirements necessary for admission into that specific program.

  • Completed Application Form

Providing the system with this information is important to determine the eligibility of an applicant for a student visa to Sweden.

  • Proof of Financial Means

You must have at least funds of up to SEK 8,064 per month for your living cost and tuition fee in Sweden. For example:

  1. For a 12-month course: At least 80,640 SEK as proof of living expenses for 10 months.
  2. For a 24-month course: Evidence of at least 161,280 Swedish kronor for 20 months of living costs.
  • Health Insurance

  1. Students who want to work in the country for over a year should register with the Swedish Tax Agency and be allocated an ID number to be eligible for healthcare in Sweden.
  2. If you are a short-term visitor to Sweden, you have to subscribe to private health insurance.
  • Proof of Accommodation

Having proof of where you are staying in Sweden shows the authorities that you are planning to reside in the country.

  • Passport-size Photographs

Including the right size and type of photographs will help you fill out the application efficiently and ensure that you have submitted complete documents.

  • Travel Itinerary

A travel itinerary explains your travel arrangements and assists the authorities in accurately estimating how long you will be in Sweden.

The ones discussed here are general requirements and may vary for different programs. However, you should be aware of the correct set of requisites where our seasoned advisors can assist you.

Visa Application Process

The process of applying for a student visa for Indians differs in some aspects from regimes followed in other European countries but many of them are essentially the same. Because both short-term courses and long-term courses are eligible for visa applications, the application procedure is different for both. A student should know the visa application procedure before selecting a course from a particular educational institution or university in Sweden.

Student Visa – for a Short-term Stay Under 90 Days.

The visa for short courses is like the Schengen Visa. VFS Global India can issue student visa applications by following these processes,

  1. Apply for a place in the Swedish universities.
  2. Organize documents to seek approval for visa application.
  3. Download the application form and submit it at the Swedish Embassy, Consulate, or Visa Application Centre.
  4. If the documents are correct and approved by authorities, the decision will be made.

Residence Permit in Sweden

Foreign students who are undertaking a course that is longer than 3 months require a residence permit to study in Sweden. The first requirement that must be fulfilled for this permit is university admission in a full-time recognized and accredited university programme within the country. Moreover, you must submit the first instalment for the selected program.

Here are the key requirements for applying for a residence permit to study in Sweden:

  • Payment of Tuition Fee

Make a cash payment of the first instalment of your tuition fee.

  • Supporting Documents

Provide the university’s acceptance letter, proof of sufficient funds, and photocopies of your passport. It should also be noted that if you are planning to stay in Sweden for less than a year then you will have to provide proof of health insurance.

  • Application Submission

Apply for a Swedish residence permit by filling out a form through the Migration Agency’s portal and remitting the fee.

  • Biometric Information

Once your application has been approved by the Swedish Migration Agency, anyone who lives near you should visit the nearest Swedish embassy to have their picture and fingerprints taken. You will receive a follow-up email later.

  • Processing Times

  1. Residence permit can be issued in approximately 3-4 months.
  2. The issue of a student visa takes about 15 days.

But these time frames may differ so a student should apply for a residence permit immediately after paying the fees to avoid late commencement of class. However, it is possible that the visa could be denied, in which case the applicant would have to resubmit the application. This might turn into a long and tedious process with longer processing time for the residence permit, possibly causing delays in the commencement of the course.

Sweden Student Visa Fees

The student applying for the residence permit should pay the application fee using a Credit Card or Charge Card. But if the application is being made from the Swedish embassy the fee must be available in cash at the same time. Let it be noted that the fee will not be reimbursed in case of rejection of the application. Furthermore, the residence permit fee is shared by the applicant and their family members, for instance, a spouse and the like.

Below is the approximate fee structure,

  1. Adult: 1500 SEK
  2. Child: 750 SEK
