Application Deadlines in USA

Application deadlines are important milestones in your application process. Different universities have different deadlines. • A-, B, B+, C grade universities: February/March of the same year
    • C-, D grade universities: June/July of the same year
  • Spring Intake
    • Top Universities (A, A+): March/April of the same year
    • A-, B, B+, C grade universities: July/August of the same year
    • C-, D grade universities: October/November
  • Summer Intake: March

Types of Deadlines in the USA

Aspiring international students can pick from a variety of deadlines or intakes at the universities and colleges in the US when submitting their applications for admission. Students should be aware that their application process must be finished prior to the deadlines for spring 2023 applications, fall intake in the USA 2023, and summer intake in the USA 2023.

Early Decision

For an early decision, you must submit your application by mid-November (when you are in your 12th grade) to receive a decision by the end of December. This is an excellent alternative for two reasons: first, if you apply early, you have a better chance of getting into the college of your choice because there are less people fighting for the available seats. It also proves your preference for that particular college to the AdCom. And two, it eases your concerns about college, allowing you to concentrate for the following three months on your board exams.

But there’s a problem. Early decision is legally binding. Thus you cannot decline the college’s offer of admission. Additionally, you would need to withdraw your application from every other college you have applied to. Because you can only apply to one college through early decision, think very carefully about your choices after discussing it with your counsellor.

Early Action

The fact that early action is non-binding is its strongest feature. You must submit your application by November to be considered for admission. The results are announced by December. Your application might occasionally be put off until a regular decision date, particularly if the early application pool is overcrowded. In that situation, it is wise to get in touch with the admissions office and inquire about submitting any additional paperwork to support your application. Only do this if you are incredibly passionate about the college.

However, the early action for some colleges comes with a restriction. For instance, if you have applied for an early action decision with Harvard, you are not permitted to apply for an early action anywhere else. Same goes for Yale, Princeton, and Stanford. These colleges define this deadline as single choice early action.

University Name Application Deadline
Massachusetts Institute of Technology November 1
Harvard University November 1
University of Chicago November 1
Yale University November 1
Princeton University November 1
University of Michigan November 1
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth November 15
Columbia University March 1

Regular Decision

These are the most frequent deadlines that are offered. They are not legally binding, so you can apply to and be accepted by numerous universities at once. Regular decision applications for fall admissions must be received by colleges by January or February of that year in order to get an admission decision by the following month. Although early decision seems like a terrific alternative in terms of your chances of admission, if you are price-sensitive, applying under regular decision is advised.

University Name Regular Decision Deadlines
John Hopkins University January 3
University of Michigan – Ann Arbor February 1
New York University January 5
Duke University January 4
Brown University January 5
Boston University January 4
Wesleyan University January 1
San Jose University April 1
Northwestern University January 3
University of California – Berkeley November 30
Carnegie Mellon University January 3

Rolling Admission

Students who want to apply to colleges that accept rolling admissions have a wide window of opportunity. As soon as the application is received by the admissions office, a decision is taken about admission. As applications are reviewed as they come in, open seats may fill up rapidly. This indicates that you should apply as soon as possible. Despite having rolling admissions, certain schools may still have deadlines. Penn State, for example, has a priority deadline of November 30.

Financial Aid Deadline

This is the timeline by when you should submit your application if you wish to be considered for FAFSA or any of the other financial aids that you may be eligible for.

Round 1, 2, 3 Deadlines

These deadlines are typically applicable for MBA programs. The Round 1 deadlines are in the months of September/October, round 2 deadlines are in the months of January, and round 3 deadlines are in April.

Not all institutions offer all deadlines, so check their websites to keep track of specific ones. With the right knowledge, you will know just when to apply, and deadlines will no longer be dreaded events!
