LOR for Student to Study Abroad

Students seeking admission to international universities must submit documents as part of the application process. A letter of Recommendation (LOR) is a prime document that highly impacts your admission to your dream college.

Generally, the LOR is prepared by a trusted guide, teacher, or administrative figure who knows you professionally. The letter’s content must be customized according to the international course or university you are seeking.

What is LOR?

A letter of recommendation is a formal document written by someone to endorse you. This can be written by anyone who knows you well professionally – a teacher or an employer. It is a letter of reference that highlights your strengths, qualifications, and character.

The LOR plays an instrumental role in the application process by providing valuable insights to the admissions committee.

Importance of a LOR for Studying Abroad

While a Letter of Recommendation is not always a compulsory document in the requirement list of many foreign universities, it is a tool to increase a student’s credit points. The LOR is generally written by an authoritative figure who knows the student well.

A good LOR helps the selection committee flawlessly understand the candidate’s strong skills, caliber, and academic achievements. This is why it is recommended to request a LOR from someone who has valuable insights into your academic achievements and performance.

Types of LOR

Even though a Letter of Recommendation doesn’t have a fixed format, the tone and information in the letter are vital. Based on the type of LOR, only relevant content should be included in the document. Otherwise, the LOR may decrease the credibility of the student’s academic profile.

  • Personal LOR: The most generic type of LOR that briefly describes the background, academic insights, work ethics, and versatility of the student. A personal LOR carries a more flexible drafting style based on the preference of the authoritative figure.
  • Academic LOR: This LOR is specifically issued by a teacher, faculty, Head of Department, or professor who has directly supervised the academic performance of the student. Unlike the Personal LOR, this letter is more focused on the academic details of the candidate and their suitability for the course or university they are applying to.
  • Professional LOR: Professional LORs are generally submitted by students who have prior work experience and wish to highlight their performance in their application. Similar to Academic LORs, a Professional Letter of recommendation is issued by a colleague, supervisor, or client for whom the candidate has worked.

Format of Letter Of Recommendation to Study Abroad

While a LOR doesn’t need to follow a strict format, certain sections have to be included to make it valuable.

  • Letterhead: To make a LOR a valid document, it must be written on the letterhead of the concerned institute or University.
  • Date: Mention when the letter is written in the top left corner.
  • Salutation: The letter has to be addressed to the concerned admission in charge or a valid recipient.
  • Introduction: The writer needs to start the LOR by introducing themselves and their position. After this, they need to describe their working relationship with the student.
  • Student Introduction: It is necessary to write a brief background of the applicant along with details of their academic course.
  • Academic/Professional Performance: The key strengths, capabilities, performance insights, and dedication of the candidate must be written in detail. This section is the core body of any LOR.
  • Conclusion: The letter must end with a brief reason stating why the candidate is suitable for the course/position.
  • Contact Information: The authoritative figure writing the application must provide their email, phone number, or other contact details.
  • Signature & Stamp: The LOR must be signed by the issuer along with an official stamp.

How to Write A Good LOR?

  • Choosing the right referee: A LOR has to be written by someone who has worked closely with you and is an authoritative figure.
  • Approach the referee ahead of time: To extract the best version of the LOR, approach the person well before the deadline so they have enough time to write a detailed letter.
  • Factual Accuracy: The academic and other details provided in the LOR should match your records and documents.
  • Customization to the course: The LOR should be drafted to complement the course description you want to join.
  • Focus on skills: The letter of recommendation should highlight all your academic and professional skills, which can be perceived as useful by the admission authorities of the course concerned.
