GMAT FAQ's

Can I reschedule a GMAT appointment?

One can reschedule even 1 day before the test date. No appointment changes can be made or modified within 24 hours of the exam appointment time. The reschedule fees is structured in three tiers based on your scheduled appointment day. It varies from $50 to $150. Check mba.com to know the latest fee structure.

Can I cancel my GMAT score if I feel I have not done good?

If you feel that you have not performed well on your GMAT test and feel like cancelling your scores, then you can cancel your GMAT scores right after taking the test. Once you decide on canceling your scores at the center, you still can reinstate your scores within 60 days from the date of taking the exam with no additional cost. However, in case you accepted your scores at the test center, you can cancel your scores online within 72 hours of completing the test.

Do business schools have a minimum GMAT score requirement?

Most schools will not set a minimum requirement for GMAT scores, although most will publish the average GMAT score of their students. This information is usually readily available on schools’ websites. So, do your research and find out the average scores for the schools you want to apply to.

How many times can I take the GMAT?

You can retake the GMAT up to 5 times in a rolling 12-month period and not more than 8 times in a lifetime. However, if you want to take it more than that then you can submit an application to GMAC. You must also understand that you should give a concrete reason; otherwise, your request will be cancelled. Also, if you score an 800 on the exam, you will not be allowed to retake the test for another 5 years!

What is the GMAT Math Syllabus?

The concepts tested in the GMAT Quantitative Reasoning section are no greater than what the students learn in high school. The section tests Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, and Word Problems. Note that topics such as Trigonometry, Calculus, and Complex numbers are not tested on the GMAT exam. Some questions may appear to require Trigonometry formulas for getting the answer. This will happen only if you lack knowledge of certain concepts which are a part of the US curriculum but not taught in other curriculums.

Does the GMAT syllabus change every year?

No, the GMAT syllabus has remained the same since its execution. Some new concepts may get added here and there, but the main topics tested on the GMAT remain the same. For example, questions on Permutations and Combinations are common on the GMAT exam since the GMAT test was administered for the first time, but we never witnessed a question on circular permutations until a couple of years ago.

What is the section order of GMAT and the total duration of the test?

The GMAT consists of 4 sections – Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA), Integrated Reasoning (IR), Quantitative Reasoning, and Verbal Reasoning; and the student may choose from the 3 Section Orders available to him.

  • AWA, IR, Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning
  • Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, IR, AWA
  • Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, IR, AWA

The GMAT exam is 3 hours and 7 minutes long excluding the two optional 8-minute breaks and tutorials.

Can I skip any section in the GMAT exam?

It is not possible to skip the IR, Quant, or Verbal sections. For the AWA section, a candidate can leave that question blank and move forward, which would result in a 0 score for AWA. While this would not impact the Total Score, we highly recommend candidates complete all sections, as it might look strange to admissions officers if the AWA score is 0.

Is there any negative marking on the GMAT?

No, there is no negative marking as such. However, since the GMAT is a computer adaptive exam, you have to be careful with the questions. As you get questions right on the test, your score increases and you will get harder questions in return and as you will get questions wrong, you will get easier questions in return with lesser weightage. Harder questions will result in higher scores and easier questions will result in comparatively lower scores. Also, there is a penalty for leaving the questions unanswered at the end of the section due to insufficient time. So, you must complete the test at any cost.

Can I take the GMAT exam online?

The GMAT is a computer adaptive test and is administered online. You may take the test either in the test center or from the comfort of your home. The choice is yours.

Who authorizes the GMAT syllabus?

GMAC (Graduate Management Admission Council) prescribes the GMAT syllabus.

How long does it take to cover the GMAT syllabus?

Generally, it takes 2 to 3 months for an average student to finish the course. For a weak student, it may take 6 months or more. More than finishing the course, it is important to focus on learning the various techniques designed specifically for the GMAT and their application. You may opt for GMAT online coaching for more organized and guided learning.

Does GMAT need coaching?

A majority of international students who take the SAT typically enroll in coaching. Coaching facilities will show you how to read questions so that you may choose an answer that is more certain to be correct. They will also help you with time management, grade your essays, and identify your weak areas. However, rather than the number of hours you spend receiving coaching, your performance will be more influenced by the effort and practice you put forth. Take as many practice exams as you can, and try to answer every question. Work diligently on the questions you frequently get wrong.
