Building an exceptional & differentiated profile for securing admission into a global university requires a lot of patience & hard work. Right from good academic scores, clarity of purpose, and language proficiency to strong recommendations, all the elements come together to build a great profile. However, one more vital element from an admission committee’s point of view is the level of research (depth of subject knowledge) being displayed by the student. This is where a research-oriented internship with a university professor during admission planning helps.
The International Internship Program at Manya allows students to complete their internship in a specific subject with a university professor/ researcher/ scholar or business leader! Students are able to expand and apply their knowledge of an academic subject in ways not possible within school courses. Paired with the state-of-the-art interactive communications and program management platform, students are able to collaborate with mentors in an accessible, convenient and organized remote learning environment that replicates in-person communication. With hard work, students not only complete a research project or written work/publication but can also earn a letter of recommendation – an influential asset for future admissions or employment goals!
Let’s look at some of the students who leveraged International Internship to build an exceptional global profile –
City of residence: Hyderabad, India
School: Delhi Public School Nacharam
Intended Major: Physics/Aerospace Engineering
Age: 11th Grade
What challenges did he face?
He would like to grasp a higher level of theoretical physics in preparation for university in the near future.
He was trying to advance his Python skills to plot more useful statistical graphs, which will be helpful for his coursework when he goes to university.
How did our program help him?
He managed to understand and calculate concepts of Quantum Mechanics that are normally taught at the undergraduate college level. That jump in knowledge is certainly challenging! He also explored more in detail and managed to run computational calculations applied to Condensed Matter Physics.
“Aasrith was an incredibly polite and very smart student. He answered pointed questions and solved his homework/computational project with ease. An excellent student that will do well at any top University” – Dr. Alberto De La Torre Duran, Brown University
City of residence: Gurugram, India
School: The Shri Ram School, Moulsari
Intended Major: Environmental Studies
Age: 11th Grade
What challenges did she face?
She would like to work on a research project in environmental studies and need help in brainstorming a strong topic.
She has a wide range of environmental topics that would not logically be able to be combined in a single research paper project.
How did our program help her?
She was able to gain a better understanding of making references in her research paper.
She wrote a fantastic research paper that was later published on a Journal website
“She is a very thoughtful, responsible, and well-prepared student. She displayed a maturity and clarity of purpose that was on the level of the some of the stronger undergraduate students I have worked with at Brown.” – Mr. Kurt Teichert, Brown University
City of residence: Bengaluru, India
School: Innisfree House School
Intended Major: Physics
Age: 11th Grade
What challenges did he face?
Due to time constraints on the student’s end, the mentorship session was conducted twice a week instead, and he has a lot to learn within the shortened timeframe.
How did our program help him?
He did an incredible 1-hour presentation for the mentor to assess him on various skills including presentation and theoretical skills.
Due to the student’s hard work and intelligence, the mentor will be writing a letter of recommendation for him.
“He is a smart, inquisitive and dedicated student. Extremely polite. I hope that if he decides to continue his studies in Physics, I have the chance to work with him in the future.” – Dr. Alberto De La Torre Duran, Brown University
Residency: Bengaluru, India
School: Greenwood High ICSE Campus Sarjapur Road
Intended Major: Computer Science
Age: Grade 10
What challenges did he face?
With a certain foundation in computer science, Samvel would like to deep-dive into aspects of machine learning and learn advanced coding skills.
Samarth had to overcome the limitations brought on by the newness of BCI (Brain-Computer Interface) application development.
How did our program help him?
The program has proved to provide a new learning ground for Samvel, who learned to use Python and Jupyter Notebook to reach his research goals and also to understand components of data visualization and application to his datasets.
The program was able to challenge him sufficiently and to work with a qualified professor on research which he has been interested in for a long time.
“Samarth and I took advantage of our generational differences and cultural differences to make diversity a strength in cooperative coding. I really enjoyed seeing that in action. He is an intelligent student with a great amount of sincerity and dedication to his work.” – Dr. Campbell, Brown University
Residency: India
Intended Major: Computer Science
Age: Grade 12
What challenges did she face?
Anusha would like to gain some experience in computer science which wasn’t taught in school.
Anusha was having a bit of a problem with data collection and parameter citation during the course.
How did our program help her?
We set Anusha up in a 2-month program with Dr. Hoel focusing on artificial neural networks.
Aisha also used Python to construct simple, but effective, artificial neurons
“Anusha has been a wonderful student. She is always excited by the subject and always attentive. She never misses a class and asks great questions. The only thing challenging so far is just the material is of course quite advanced, but she has a very good handle on it.”
Residency: Tamil Nadu, India
School: Notre Dame of Holy Cross School
Intended Major: Cosmology
Age: Grade 12
What challenges did she face?
Gracia has a burning passion for Cosmology and would like to work with a professor who specializes in this research topic, but that wasn’t available in school.
Gracia was met with various challenging questions in her pursuit to develop the research paper, however, that was solved by creating a question sheet Dr. Sanitt and Gracia shared on a regular basis.
How did our program help her?
Gracia was able to gain a deeper understanding of Astronomy and Cosmology theories to develop her research paper.
Gracia learned to use the Hertzsprung-Russell (HR) diagram to investigate the relationship between the stars’ absolute magnitudes or luminosities versus their spectral class or effective temperatures.
“Gracia was extremely keen to learn and engage with the subject.
She is an extremely able student. In her own quiet way, she succeeds in everything thrown at her: a pleasure to teach.” – Dr. Nigel Sanitt, former lecturer of UCL
City of Residence: India
Intended Major: Mathematics
Age: Grade 11
What challenges did she face?
She has good knowledge of Python but needed robust research to put into her portfolio.
How did our program help her?
The mentor provided guidance on implementing Python and R together to specify time series models, which allowed the student to compute standard errors of coefficient estimates and permit the computation of p-values.
She was able to analyze the time series stock exchange and gained a deeper understanding of ARIMA models.
“She is extremely bright, focused, and effective in her research work. Her organization of research results and analyses is excellent. She demonstrated a highly professional, mature, and positive attitude toward her research work during the program. She is a delightful person with whom I enjoyed every meeting.” – Dr. Peter Kempthorne, MIT
Residency: New Delhi, India
Intended Major: Business/Computer Science
Age: Grade 11
What challenges did he face?
Arsh would like to gain some experience in statistical analysis which wasn’t taught in school.
Having an interest in business, he is also keen to explore database analysis of potential franchisees for Indian businesses
How did our program help him?
We set Arsh up in a 2-month program with Dr. Kempthorne to master statistical concepts and methods for analyzing categorical and quantitative read-world data.
Arsh has learned to develop algorithms for cleaning/filtering categorical data.
Through his hard work and dedication, Dr. Kempthorne will be very happy to provide a letter of recommendation for Arsh to use on his college application.
